Meet Our Flock of Chickens and Learn About Their Breeds

To help us eat clean and become as self sustainable as possible, we’ve started our own flock of chickens. We’ve had a few years to research how to raise chickens (actually, more than a decade) in addition to a lot of guidance from friends we’ve met along the way. To start the process, we decided to incubate our own eggs in order to reduce the risk of disease. While it’s also fairly safe to buy day-old chicks, we just wanted to mitigate the risk all together. We also wanted to experience the whole process of incubating and hatching the eggs, as it’s a great learning experience for the kids. We chose to collect in array of rainbow eggs in order to experience many different breeds.

The issue now is chicken math as I seem to want at least one of every breed!

Our Current Chicken Breeds

Americauna (Blue Eggs) – Domestic Chicken bred in the 1970’s in the USA.B

Cream Brabranter (White Eggs)Black Copper Marans (Dark Brown Eggs) Dual Purpose 1900s Origin France.

Cochins – (Pink Eggs) Heritage, Dual Purpose – Brought to America in the 1840s from a French Colony that is Vietnam (Many sites say it is of Chinese origin) They have feathers even on their feet. This was my breed of choice, from the moment I laid eyes on them, I was smitten.

Black Copper Marans (Dark Brown Eggs) Dual Purpose 1900s Origin France.Orphington – Isabel, Lavender, Chocolate, Mauve, Blue, Black, Mottled) (Brown Eggs) Dual Purpose. This is a British Breed in 1886. Very friendly and great with children. They make great brooding mothers and produce large eggs.

Cream Legbar (Blue to Green Eggs)

Olive Egger (Green Eggs) This is a mixed breed. You take a dark coloured egg-laying chicken like a Maran and breed it with a blue-laying chicken such as an Americauna to get the lovely green coloured eggs! I mean, who doesn’t want green eggs and ham for breakfast? (Don’t worry the yokes aren’t green).

Orphington – Isabel, Lavender, Chocolate, Mauve, Blue, Black, Mottled) (Brown Eggs) Dual Purpose. This is a British Breed in 1886. Very friendly and great with children. They make great brooding mothers and produce large eggs.
