All About Our American Fuzzy Lops

ORIGIN:

The American Fuzzy Lop all started because breeders of the Holland Lop just wanted to add more variety of coat options as they only came in solid colours. To introduce a broken pattern they bred in the English Spot, this did produce the broken patterns they were looking for, however they lost the rollback that the Holland needs to have! So they countered it by using the French Angora to get back the proper rollback. By adding the French Angora a recessive gene was hidden away. Later when two holland lops were bred together that both had the “fuzzy” gene they would on occasion have an adorable fuzzy wooled baby. Together a small group of breeders took these long wooled Holland Lops and used them to developed into the American Fuzzy Lop.

BREED:

The AFL, isn’t bred for meat, or wool – They are too small as a meat rabbit, and their wool is quite short.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) recognizes a number of Lops: The American Fuzzy Lops, the Holland Lop, the English Lop and the wonderful French Lop which we also breed.

They are a very small breed, reaching a max of 4 pounds.

TEMPERMENT: The AFL is such a sweet, docile and very friendly rabbit. Our children just adore them!

CARE: The grooming is actually hardest when they are kits, before they leave their mom, but their adult coats are much more manageable and NOTHING compared to the English Angora in terms of difficulty. It is in between the almost no fur maintenance of the French, I give a brush when they blow their coats (Moulting) and wanting to pull my own hair out dealing with the English Angora’s gorgeous, but challenging in our climate wool.
