Hi there!

We are Becky, Jay, Connor, Brooke and our wonderful service dog Oslo!

Becky and Jay are Organic Master Gardeners and have a passion for permaculture & sustainable living.

  • Becky is a red seal apprentice in landscape horticulture, production horticulture and an arborist technician. She is a organic master gardener with a passion for permaculture. She is also a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and a Clinical Hypnotherapist.
  • Jay is a permaculturist, organic master gardener and a massage practitioner who specializes in deep tissue and myofascial release. Most of Jay’s work experience has been in the resort industry from ski resorts to cruise ships to high end hotels.
  • Connor & Brooke are our little ones who keep us on our toes and bring great joy to our lives.
  • Oslo is Jay’s service dog (a poodle!) who is always by his side.

In  2001 we started building our dream of a spectacular retreat and off-the-grid B&B. The catch is, we wanted it to have all the luxuries of everyday living. We just bought the property we need…and now it’s time to make our eco-retreat a reality!

Why are we called ‘The Forest Guild’?

A guild is usually defined as an association of people working toward a common goal. In Permaculture, a guild is a grouping of plants, trees, animals and insects that work together to help benefit the health and productivity of the group.

The best example of a plant guild is the 3 sisters guild: the planting of corn, bean and squash. These crops benefit from each other by working together: the corn provides a structure for the beans to climb, eliminating the need for poles; the beans provide the nitrogen for the soil that the other plants use; and the squash acts as ground cover, a “living mulch,” creating a microclimate to retain moisture in the soil, blocking out the sunlight and helping prevent weeds and the prickly hairs of the vine deter pests. All other plant guilds aim for this kind of beneficial partnership. This is what we are trying to accomplish with the formation of ‘The Forest Guild’: Bring people together for benefit of all.

This blog will document our journey from getting the acreage, to dealing with some of the hurdles that have changed our lives, including epilepsy, to building our dream.
