Being at home with two crazy kids can be extremely exhausting. I’m constantly trying to come up with new activities to distract and occupy them from destroying any progress that I’ve made at cleaning the house. In staying with our theme of being as eco-friendly as possible, I try to come up with crafts that use some of the waste that we would either recycle or throw out.

One of my favourite crafts I have done with the kids is the fire starter.

Starting a fire in the spring with wet wood is not fun. It is really time consuming trying to keep a flame going so the fire can catch. So, we came up with a fun, clever solution that is quick and easy!

TO MAKE FIRE STARTERS YOU WILL NEED:

  • Paper egg cartons or toilet paper rolls -We go through a lot of eggs and toilet paper, so paper cartons and rolls are always readily available.
  • Dryer lint -Having two kids that are four and under means laundry is endless and is always going, so I never have a shortage of dryer lint.
  • Old candles – Bec had lost of old decorative candles with the middle burned out, but still plenty of wax left over.

DIRECTIONS:

*Make sure to explain to your kids how hot the wax is and not to touch their project until after it has dried! I’m sure you may have to repeat this over and over again like I do.*

1. First we gather our supplies.

2. The next thing you want to do is get a pot to melt down the old candles. Place the old candles or wax in the pot and melt on medium.

3. While the candle wax is melting down, I get the kids to break up pieces of the dryer lint, and stuff it into the egg carton or toilet paper rolls.

4. Once our dryer lint is depleted and our wax is melted down, we are all ready to pour the wax into each lint-filled cup and roll.

The wax dries in the egg carton and toilet paper tubes.

5. When dry, the starters will be hard and ready to go.

The fire starters are almost done!

Break one off– it’s ready to go!

Place in your fire pit, light and watch your fire starter burn!

REVIEW: I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to start a fire with our homemade fire starter, even with damp material. Break a single cup off of the egg carton, light a side and place it in the fire pit. Stack your burning material around your fire starter, and it will hold a flame until the fire is blazing–it’s just that easy. The pride on your kids’ faces knowing they made that fire is something you can’t buy. So there you go, an amazing craft that repurposes garbage, keeps your kids entertained and saves you time when starting your campfire.

You will have to try it. I just love camping, or lounging in the backyard sipping on some wine with a small fire.

Thanks! It really can’t get any easier than that. So much less frustrating than fighting with a fire to start.
