All About Our French Lops

The rabbit breed I always wanted, but wasn’t able to get my hands on right away was the French Lop. I wanted a commercial breed, dual purpose that had big floppy ears!

ORIGIN: The French Lop is a domestic rabbit that was developed in France by combing the Giant Papillon and the English Lop in the 1850s.

BREED: The French Lop is a commercial breed that was primarily used as a meat rabbit in the mid 19th century, other breeds such as the New Zealand, Californian or Satin, tend to be more popular as a meat rabbit as they mature much quicker than the French Lop, which can shave off at least a couple weeks. The French Lop has a lot of bone, and a huge head, so though they are giants, their bone to weight ratio isn’t quite as good as some of the other breeds and they eat a lot! There is NO weight limit on the French Lop, a male (buck) needs to be 11+ or female (doe) 11.5 lbs for showing as a senior.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) recognizes a number of Lops: the Holland Lop, The American Fuzzy Lops (We also raise) the English Lop and the French Lop.

TEMPERAMENT: They are really cuddly, and easy to mistake as a small dog when free ranging, and make great pets. The French Lop lifespan averages 6-8 years. PROS: Their coat requires very little maintenance a complete 180 compared to our high maintenance English Angora’s.
